This restaurant gives diners some strong
reasons to visit, and equally strong reasons to stay away. First the up
side. They often run a special that can't be beat consisting of a 2
pound lobster, soup or salad and a side dish for $19.95. The place
starts filling up early, and you'll see at least one person at each
table joyfully working through a meaty lobster. The lobsters are served
either stuffed or steamed, and they're nicely prepared in our
experience. The salad is simple with iceberg lettuce, cucumber, carrot
slivers and piece of tomato. Their steaks are flavorful, tender and have
a great flame grilled flavor. Plus if you like live music and dancing,
you'll enjoy the dance bands they bring in later in the evening (check
for a schedule), drawing a good size crowd for the space.
On the down side, when you walk inside
you'll notice the STRONG smell of cigarette smoke. Even when no one is
smoking in the adjacent bar, the place is so permeated that it smells
like you put your nose in an ashtray. There's no other restaurant in
Southeast Florida, Southwest Florida or Orlando that we've experienced
this in since the smoking laws changed in this state. Somehow, despite
the fact that the bar is completely open to the dining area, guests are
allowed to smoke in the bar. At night when the bar fills up, the
restaurant air is thick with smoke. Those with allergies will
want to stick to earlier dining, or even to avoid this restaurant all
together.
Depending on what you order, their prices
are either consistent with other steakhouses such as Outback, or they're
higher. Yet the decor is on the shabby side, and not shabby chic. Tables
and chairs are rickety, and seem like inexpensive bar setups that are
long past their prime. At one visit we had to try several of the
uncomfortable wood stick chairs until we found one that we thought would
not collapse. Tables are situated uncomfortably close together, and
wheelchairs will not be able to gain access anywhere other than the few
tables on the perimeters. The dishware is also very low end, appearing
to be on-the-side-of-the-highway-diner-style.
In the evening as the place fills up, the
noise is deafening. Between the crowd stuffed in the dining room, and
the music and noise from the bar, incredibly loud and chaotic. The wait
staff have to yell to be heard. During early hours we had a lovely
waitress who provided good service, but when we went during peak dinner
time, the waiter was so busy he barely had time to take our order and
run. We rarely saw him, and had to flag him down to get anything. On two
occasions we found the hosts to be rather rude. We had the feeling the
could take us or leave us. Politeness and seeing to our comfort was not
on their agenda.
We asked about their handling of special
dietary needs, and we were told that they do not accommodate these.
While they may be willing to share ingredients, they won't take any type
of special requests.
